Bacteria sends mountain bike racer to hospital

Within 48 hours of completing a 67km ride, over 18 bikers became infected with campylobacter, a bacteria whose symptoms include seven days of severe diarrhea, nausea, stomach pain, fever, and vomiting.  Race organizers are trying to identify the cause of the infection but are unsure as to what the source could be.  Some speculate that mud on the course contained animal waste which coated many of the bikes and water bottles throughout the race.  Others believe that riders stopped during the race to refill water reserves from streams and rivers which may have contained the annoying bacteria.
