Where do infections hide?  The answer is everywhere.  And how do you get rid of them?  You clean!  Cleaning involves many different things, but one thing that is overlooked most times is removing the clutter first before you start the cleaning.  WINCHESTER hospital is staging a big clear out so that its wards and clinical areas are easier to clean and less likely to harbour infections, a good practise for all hospitals to follow. It may not sound like a big deal, but the simple act of removing clutter can help reduce infection rates in hospitals.  We all remember cleaning our rooms at home and if you were anything like me, phase 1 involved picking up all your clothes, homework, and occasional plates and glasses off the floor.  "It makes it easier to vaccum" my mom would say.

To properly clean things unnecessary clutter must be removed first, and this is probably most true in Hospitals.  WINCHESTER hospital is doing just that.  De-Cluttering involves removing old supplies and equipment from hallways, rooms, and storage areas, and also involves ensuring that everything a patient needs will fit nicely into lockers.

Cleaning every once in a while is great, but WINCHESTER is going one step further using induction, team meetings, job descriptions and appraisals to remind staff of their responsibilities in reducing the risk of infections spreading. Training has also been reviewed and the Trust has invested in a new pc-based training package on good infection control.
