When done correctly, handwashing is the single most effective way to prevent the spread of communicable diseases. Good handwashing technique is easy to learn and can significantly reduce the spread of infectious diseases. This article discusses the benefits of hand washing, proper techniques, and using antibacterial gels when soap and water is not available.

There is actually more to good handwashing than you think - and this article shows you that. It encourages you to take your time and do it right:

1) By rubbing your hands vigorously with soapy water, you pull soils and the oily dirt away from your skin. The lather traps the dirt and germs so they can be rinsed away.

2) Lather with soap for at least 10 seconds.

3) Wash the front and back of your hands, between your fingers and under your nails.

4) Rinse your hands well under warm running water and dry them completely with a clean towel. It is noted that you can be extra careful by using a clean paper towel to turn off the water and then throwing it away.
