Today, more than ever before, patient safety is being more closely monitored by hospitals, consumers, health care reformers, governments and patients. Due to such, institutions like the Canadian Institute for Health Information (CIHI) shows that one in nine Canadian adults will acquire a hospital infection, and that one in nine Canadians also receives an incorrect medication or medication dosage.

Patient safety and infection control are both big challenges. More attention is now being paid to all aspects of patient care due to this increased awareness surrounding patient safety issues. This spotlight is beginning to illuminate practices that are contributing to adverse events.
