Written from a patient's viewpoint, this article details how complacency and ignorance are key dangers for infection control. It goes on to detail how alcohol-based gels can save up to 20,000 deaths in the US alone each year.
The author speaks of a nurse who began to take his blood pressure and temperature when all of a sudden he felt a prick in his hand. Upon inspection, he finds that the nurse has put an IV catheter into his hand without gloves on, nor had she washed her hands prior to inserting the needle.
The author then indicated that he was concerned with the fact that she did not wear gloves and promptly informed her that her violations of OSHA guidelines could have fined her facility upwards of $70,000 for a wilful violation. The author was later informed by the nurse that she was not able to feel the veins well enough with gloves on, which is why she took the actions she took.
